THE REAL TANTRA by ROBBY HOLLY
– INTRODUCTION
Tantra originated in Vedic writings India over 3500 years, and it was believed that the spoken stories were handed down for centuries before that. It is a philosophy with rituals and spiritual practices that has influenced many Asian religions and eastern philosophies ever since.
“Tantra”, in Sanscrit, one of the oldest languages on the planet, meant “weave”. It was a tradition that was modeled on the “Vedas”, which, being some of the oldest surviving texts in the world, were considered to be revealed knowledge about the nature of consciousness itself.
The study of Tantra was kept secret by those wanting to preserve it's more complex subtleties and protect themselves from the prejudices and power struggles that have often beset great spiritual teachings throughout history.
The beliefs represented in those vast texts were difficult to understand for the average person, and required a more self-aware perception, so often became targets of ridicule and abuse.
The rituals and chanting that were a part of the ancient teachings designed to attune one to the universal Godhead often included visualizing sexual union with deities. Along with sexual practices to heighten awareness and mastery of various energies for communication and healing, modern civilization came to understand Tantra as a philosophy that taught spiritual enlightenment through sexual training.
There were many components of Tantra, other than the sexual teachings, but the Western world has gravitated strongly to that aspect in response to a tendency towards sexualizing their feelings, more than an interest in spiritual enlightenment.
Originally Tantra included teachings on whole-body health that focused on mind, body, and spirit. Due to western religions zeal in demonizing sex and the pleasures of our bodies, much was kept from our society's education systems.
Although Tantra has many aspects to its practices, both in external rituals or internal process, like the universe itself, it is a manifestation and balance of energies.
The two we identify with, male and female, have very different qualities and appearance, but must and do eternally coexist.
The balance of Tantra is to know them together as one.
Through a process of awakening the mind and body, the two are experienced in their state of union in a consciously loving relationship.
Ultimately Tantra is about unconditional Love, the heart of the universe and the art of healing what comes up in Love's presence.
